Kung Fu in Shenmue 3 refers to the combat style that Hazuki Ryo uses on battles. Below you will find all the information related to Kung Fu and how to increase its effectiveness.

Shenmue 3 Kung Fu

Ryo uses Kung Fu to defeat his enemies in battle. Kung Fu determines how strong Ryo is in general, both his damage and health, and can be improved by training two main stats called Attack and Defense.

 

Attack

Attack is one of two main stats of Kung Fu. Attack level determines how much damage Ryo's attack will do if landed successfully on an enemy. Leveling up Attack will result in increasing your Kung Fu level experience bar.

Attack can be level up in two different ways:

  • One-Inch Punch Training: You can access training by using the One-Inch Punch dummies located outside the dojo. Once you access the dummies, select the One-Inch Punch and the training will begin.
    This training requires you to press the X button when both blue lines align in the center of the screen. Better timings provide with more experience.

    NOTE: Training consumes HP so it's advisable to carry Food if you are going to do an extended training practice

  • Sparring:  You can increase your attack by completing Sparring matches against any opponent. You can always find a Sparring partner at the Dojo

Endurance

Endurance is one of two main stats of Kung Fu. Endurance level determines the Health Points (HP) and Stamina resistance of Ryu. Having higher endurance will allow Ryu to sustain more damage and increase his chance of survival in battle. Leveling up Endurance will result in increasing your Kung Fu level experience bar.

Endurance can be leveled up by:

  • Horse Stance Training: You can access training by using the Horse Stance dummies located outside the dojo. Once you access the dummies, select the Horse Stance and the training will begin.
    In this training you must maintain Ryu's arms aligned with the green line in the middle of the screen. Ryu will be constantly be pushed upwards and the player can press X to lower his arms and maintain them aligned. The longer you maintain your arms aligned with the green line the more experience you will get.

    NOTE: Training consumes HP so it's advisable to carry Food if you are going to do an extended training practice

  • Rooster Step Training: You can access this training by talking to ???. Once the training begins, you will see Ryo walking on top of a circle and you will have to use the directional button to align the blue line with Ryo's feet. Follow Ryo's movement to acquire Rooster Step experience and when the training is complete you will also acquire Endurance experience. The longer you maintain the alignment the more experience you will get.

Kung Fu Skills

Acquiring & Equipping Skills

Skills are used in battle to perform unique combat moves. In order to use a Skill you must first equip the Skill Book. Once in battle, select the skill as the active ability and then press the indicated buttons while in the fight.

Ryo can acquire new skills by using Skill Books. Skill books can be obtained in various ways like: Purchasing, trading Herb Sets and Capsule Sets, Mini-Games, etc. Once Ryo has a Skill Book in his possession, he can equip it and use that skill in combat.

Skills are different from each other providing Ryu with many ways to attack his enemies and to fit many playstyles.

Skills Training

Some Skills can be leveled up when acquired (They will show with a Yellow circle above them). In order to do so, you can talk to a Sparring partner and begin a Spar.

While in the spar, you will notice that time slows down and a menu with four colored buttons will be shown. You have to quickly press the buttons of the Skill that is currently activ (shown on the bottom left part of the screen)e in order to successfully obtain experience. Depending on how quickly you can press the buttons you will get more or less experience.
